TURKEY A MODERN CABIN IN THE WOODS
Along the dry-stone walls and terraces of an ancient vineyard in Turkey, Ediz Demirel Works recently completed the project for a small retreat in the woods.
The vacation home, nestled in the greenery of the Kozak Plateau in Pergamon, features a lightweight architecture resting on the tilled, stony soil. Its internal steel structure is clad on the outside with Corten steel panels, while the interior is characterized by the use of light wood, creating a minimal space that extends upwards.
Close to the ground, upon entering the small retreat, we find a contemporary conversation pit that, in keeping with the site’s topography, becomes the fulcrum of this home, a space from which one can admire the Pergamon Plateau and sit around the fire. The service spaces are instead created within a series of niches conceived as an extension of the large living room.
From here, a mezzanine accommodates the sleeping area and a small workspace, while the hut’s section narrows, reminiscent of a tent.
The relationships between interior and exterior are managed through a large transverse opening on the ground floor, corresponding to the conversation pit, and several small openings projecting outward from the upper portion of the roof.
The hut thus creates a solid architecture, in dialogue with the landscape and topography, creating a minimal space in which to immerse oneself in the Turkish woods.
