INDIA THE ANTHILL PROJECT
In India, Kaushal Tatiya Architects has designed a home inspired by the ancient ingenuity of anthills to address the region’s extreme heat and ensure a high level of environmental comfort through passive design strategies. The building, characterized by sinuous, organic forms, is internally carved out by an interconnected system of openings, branches, cavities, constrictions, courtyards, and shaded passageways. Flows of light and natural cross-ventilation circulate alongside the rhythms of daily life. The massive exposed-brick envelope, with its varied textures, provides the structure with high thermal mass; this helps mitigate temperature fluctuations and creates a living ecosystem capable of self-regulation, functioning like a collective organism in balance with its environment.
